Look intoenurilNEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Pfizer Inc. said Thursday it will launch its popular OTC heartburn pill in three weeks, bringing it to market faster than other companies have before.
The launch comes after Pfizer, maker of Nexium, began a massive effort to sell its heartburn drug in the United States.
The announcement will allow the company to offer patients the first treatment for a severe form of heartburn that has been left behind by a previous episode of that condition. The drug will be available to patients in pharmacies, doctors and even on the Internet.
"The launch of OTC heartburn pills for the first time is a great opportunity to launch a treatment that is now widely available and accessible to all patients," said Pfizer Chief Executive Albert Bourla. "The availability of OTC heartburn pills for the first time represents a major opportunity for Pfizer to create a new product that will not only improve our health but also lead to more people suffering from heartburn who may not have been able to enjoy a long-term health plan."
In the wake of the announcement, the company will have an exclusive exclusive deal with a major pharmaceutical company in the United States.
The company said that its OTC heartburn pill, made by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, would be available for sale in three weeks by the end of the year.
The announcement came after an initial study in the Journal of the American Medical Association published in March indicated that over 80% of patients taking Nexium experienced a slight decrease in the number of painful episodes that occurred while taking the drug.
The study looked at nearly 2.5 million patients worldwide who had taken the drug and compared them with patients who had not taken the drug.
"Our data shows that patients who were taking the treatment experienced a slight decrease in the number of painful episodes," said Bourla. "But we wanted to know if the improvement would come faster than we had expected. If it did, we wanted to do something about it."
Bourla said the company will begin the second phase of the study, which is expected to begin in the spring of 2005, after an end of a trial that had shown that the drugs were not associated with serious heart problems. The trial was sponsored by the maker of AstraZeneca and the company had previously paid to conduct the trial.
The study will be conducted by researchers from the University of Texas Medical Branch in San Antonio, which was funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The U. S. Food and Drug Administration approved the drug in September for the treatment of reflux esophagitis, a bacterial condition that affects the upper stomach.
The company is offering the treatment in a "preferred pharmacy," the U. Food and Drug Administration said.
In the study, patients who were taking Nexium for four to six months were divided into two groups. In the first group, patients who took the treatment had a slight decrease in the number of painful episodes. In the second group, patients who took the treatment had no changes in the number of painful episodes.
Patients in the first group were also given an OTC treatment for four weeks for a heartburn that was not treated with Nexium. In the second group, patients who took the treatment had a slight decrease in the number of painful episodes. In the first group, patients who took the treatment had no changes in the number of painful episodes.
In addition to the new treatment, the company will offer two new versions of its heartburn pill, one for patients who take Nexium for four to six months and the other for four to six months, according to Bourla.
The OTC treatment for patients who took Nexium for four to six months was approved by the FDA in September for the treatment of reflux esophagitis in adults.
The FDA is to provide guidance on the drug's uses in patients who have been diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease and other heartburn-related conditions.
The new treatment is expected to be available starting in the spring of 2005.
"We believe that the launch of OTC heartburn pills in the United States represents a major opportunity to launch a treatment that is now widely available and accessible to all patients," Bourla said.
